White spots on the teeth occur when the minerals that make up the structure of the tooth enamel are missing or the minerals that make up its structure subsequently dissolve. Frequently Asked Questions
White spots occur in two ways:
- The first reason is congenital. While permanent teeth are formed in the jawbone during infancy, they appear chalk-white at some points due to missing minerals during tooth enamel formation. In these chalk-white areas, there is an enamel layer that is not mature enough or hardened enough.
- The second reason is that the tooth enamel is constantly exposed to food residues and the bacteria in the food residues produce acid and dissolve the minerals in the tooth enamel. This type of enamel stains are called white spots. It occurs especially after orthodontic treatments. Without good dental care, food residues constantly remain around the apparatus called brackets attached to the teeth during orthodontic treatment. As a result, white spots appear on the tooth surfaces.
Even though white spots occur for different reasons, their treatment is done in the same way. Although in some cases, dentists offer fillings by removing white spots, today, with the developing technology, complementary substances of missing minerals can be injected into the tooth enamel with special material without removing the tooth enamel.
This treatment method is called resin infiltration. There is ICON ®, a material brand specially produced for this treatment. In some cases, the treatment described as ICON® treatment is actually the process of creating a natural enamel by completing the missing minerals of the tooth enamel with similar substances.
White spots on the teeth can be removed with this material, usually in one session and in an average of one hour.
