Implant

Dental Implant treatment is a surgical procedure used to replace lost teeth. A screw-like implant, usually made of titanium, is placed in the jawbone and a prosthetic tooth is mounted on it, thus helping to restore the functionality and aesthetics of the natural tooth.

Frequently Asked Questions

We have compiled for you the frequently asked questions and answers that our patients are most curious about regarding Implant. Below you can find all the details about this subject.

What are the types of dental implants?

  1. Endosteal implants:
These are screw-shaped implants that are placed directly into the jawbone in people with sufficient bone tissue. Although titanium implants are widely preferred today, zircon implants are also used in some cases.
  2. Subperiosteal implants:
This type of implants are implants placed on the jawbone, not inside it. It is used when the amount of bone is not thick enough for the construction of the implant. Personalized implant designs can also be made based on tomography measurements taken from the patient.
  3. Mini implants:
These implants, which are smaller in size, are generally used to compensate for small tooth deficiencies, to compensate for narrow gaps, or to fix temporary fixed prosthetic teeth until the main implants are osteointegrated into the bone in patients with large tooth deficiencies. Nowadays, mini implants are not preferred as much as they used to be, as the possibilities of immediate loading, that is, implant surgery, as well as making fixed teeth, even if temporary, have increased.
  4. All on four implants:
It is a method used to treat complete edentulism by using a small number of implants in the jawbone. Endosteal implants are preferred in this method. It offers fixed prostheses use using 4 implants.
  5. All on six implants:
By applying a total of 6 implants to the completely edentulous jaw, support is provided for the fixed prostheses to be prepared.
  6. Zigoma implant:
It is the name given to the implant system placed between the jawbone and cheekbone (zygoma) in cases where there is not enough bone tissue for implant construction in the upper jaw. We obtain satisfactory results with this method, which allows us to offer patients the opportunity to use fixed teeth in cases where routine implant applications cannot provide a solution.
  • In cases where it is desired to compensate for the lost tooth or teeth by preserving their original state, without making any intervention to the teeth in front and behind the gap in the area where the tooth loss occurs.
  • It is applied in cases where there is no terminal tooth to connect the bridge behind the gap caused by missing teeth or the toothless gap. is longer than the supporting teeth in the mouth can support. It is also applied in cases where people who do not have any teeth in their mouth want to use fixed dentures.
  • Ağzında hiç dişi olmayan kişilerin de sabit protezler kullanmak istediği durumlarda uygulanır.
  • In order to increase the comfort of patients using a removable prostheses (palate prostheses) in a jaw with no teeth, and to ensure that the prostheses sits more balanced in the mouth, the stability of the prostheses can be improved by using some spacer parts by applying implants. Since implant-supported removable prostheses can be prepared in a way that leaves the palatal dome open and the prostheses adheres better, they are frequently recommended by physicians, and our patients are happy to use them.

We can list the stages of dental implant application as follows:

1- Inspection and Planning:
The dentist evaluates the situation according to the patient's expectations, takes x-rays of the area where the procedure will be performed and creates a plan on the film. In some cases, 3D tomography imaging may also be needed when “bone thickness may be insufficient” or when precise planning is required according to anatomical structures.

Since tomography provides 3D measured cross-sectional images of the entire region, it allows us to make more comfortable and perfect planning.

2- Surgical Operation:
It is the stage of placing the implant in the jaw bone. It is a painless procedure usually performed under local anesthesia. In some cases, we prefer to perform the procedure under general anesthesia due to the need for a large number of implants, those who are hesitant about the operation, or due to their general health condition.

3- Healing Process:
After the operation, you should use any medications prescribed by your doctor and pay attention to his recommendations. Cleaning the operation area is very important for recovery. Approximately one week after the procedure, if any stitches have been placed, the stitches are removed and the implant is waited for it to fuse to the bone and bond.

Nowadays, thanks to the structural features of implants, if there is appropriate bone support, in some cases, temporary or permanent teeth on the implant can be prepared and installed immediately after the surgical operation. Your doctor will plan the best way for you in this regard.

If immediate loading is not planned, that is, the implantation of teeth is not planned immediately after surgery, the implant is expected to fuse to the bone within the time given by your doctor, approximately 2 to 3 months.

These periods may be extended in cases where sinus lift surgery or some grafts (bone powder) are added.

During this period, implants can be left under the gums depending on their type and the physician's planning, or healing caps can be attached to shape the gums during the healing period. Covered healed implants need to be uncovered with a second small procedure and healing caps must be attached.

4- Prostheses stage
Implants that bond with the bone are now ready for prosthetic teeth and crowns to be placed on them. Measurements of the initially planned prostheses are taken, the procedures are continued by your physician, and ultimately the treatment is completed.

The factors to be considered in the person to whom the implant will be placed will, of course, be evaluated by your physician and the necessary information will be provided.

We can list the main criteria here to give you an idea:

  • If there is the required amount of healthy bone in the jaw where the implant will be applied
  • If there is no problem in the patient's health condition that would prevent the operation
  • In cases where approval is obtained from the patient's follow-up doctor regarding the medications used and health condition of the patient.

It is important that the patient's bone development is completed before the implant can be placed. Your doctor will give you accurate information on this subject.

Since your doctor will provide local anesthesia to the area before the implant application, there will be no pain during the procedure. In some cases, the operation can also be performed under general anesthesia. During procedures performed under general anesthesia, the patient does not feel any pain and does not remember anything about the moment of the operation. Mild pain and swelling may occur after the operation. Pain and swelling that may occur after the procedure can also be controlled with the medications prescribed by your doctor.

Implant application is often performed in the clinic setting, in the same way as normal dentistry treatments. Implant applications under general anesthesia may be preferred due to the patient's wishes and sometimes the general health condition. Patients who are afraid of the operation and do not want to remember or feel anything about the moment of the procedure especially want to have the procedure under general anesthesia. In clinics and hospitals with general anesthesia units like ours, your doctor will inform you about the process and make the necessary planning.

Dental implants are made of materials compatible with the human body. Usually titanium is used. Titanium is a biocompatible material and tends to fuse well with bone. Our body does not react to titanium like a foreign body. This feature facilitates osteointegration of the implant with the bone and helps the implant to fuse stably to the bone, therefore dental implants generally offer long-term success and natural appearance. Implant treatment is currently applied with a success rate as high as 98%. Failures that may occur after implant application may depend on environmental factors such as the patient's general health condition, the application not being carried out under ideal conditions, and lack of oral hygiene.

The success of implant applications is at a very high level today. Our success rate is at 98%, and thanks to the developing technology day by day, our success rate is increasing and our options for restorations on implants are increasing. In cases where there is sufficient bone tissue, it also allows fixed teeth to be loaded on the implant as soon as it is made.

Dental implant application may not be suitable for everyone. In some cases, there may be factors that make it difficult or prevent implant placement:

  1. Inadequate bone structure and lack of sufficient and healthy bone in the area where the implant will be placed may make implant construction difficult, and additional surgical procedures may be required to create additional bone.
  2. Health problems may be factors in the patient's general health that will reduce or negatively affect the success of implant application. In patients with uncontrolled high blood sugar, some gum diseases or recent radiotherapy in the head and neck area, your doctor will plan your planning according to your health condition.
  3. Smoking increases the risk of implant failure in smokers. Smoking can affect the circulatory system and slow healing. There is no such thing as an implant not being applied to patients who smoke, but higher failure rates are observed over time in patients who use it heavily due to smoking.
  4. Periodontal, that is, gum diseases; Serious gum diseases that negatively affect oral health can also negatively affect the success of the implant. It is very important to establish oral hygiene before the operation and maintain it afterwards.
  5. Young people who have not completed their development; In cases where the bone structure is not fully developed, implant application may not be appropriate, especially in individuals under the age of 18.

Your dentist will consider all these situations on your behalf and plan the most appropriate treatment for you.

The choice of implant may vary depending on a number of factors. Your doctor will definitely give you the necessary information to help you make a good choice.

  1. The experience of the brand; A long-term and successful experience increases the reliability of the implant brand. Well-established companies around the world provide more trust in this sense.
  2. Material; Implants are generally produced from titanium and its alloys or zirconium. As with every product, material quality may vary depending on the brand of the product. Generally, brands that have proven themselves worldwide and have a widespread sales and service network give more confidence in this regard.
  3. Implant design also interacts with many factors, from the restoration to be made on it to the area where it will be applied. Your physician will determine the most suitable model and superstructure option for you and enlighten you on this subject.
  4. Dentist's choice; It is important for the success of the procedure that your physician recommends implant brands that he has experienced and is satisfied with the results of, and that the patient adheres to the physician's recommendations in this regard.

Implant application price may vary depending on the brand of the implant to be used, whether an additional surgical procedure will be performed (sinus lift, graft application), the price policy of the clinic where the procedure is performed, and the terms of service.

All treatments should undoubtedly be carried out perfectly, especially surgical procedures such as implants are delicate operations that must be performed successfully. In case of failure, redoing them becomes burdensome for the patient.

For this reason, in such treatments, you should establish a good dialogue with the physician, clearly discuss your expectations and the alternatives that the physician will offer you, and apply the most appropriate treatment option according to your budget.

For implant application, the bone development process must be completed. It is generally not preferred for people under the age of 18. Since the development of girls is a little earlier, in some cases the application can be done earlier. Your doctor will give you the most accurate information on this subject after the examination.

It is not correct to assign a certain lifespan to implants in the mouth. Implants do not have an expiration date depending on their physical properties. It is possible for people's implants to serve them for many years if they pay attention to their oral hygiene and do not skip regular dentist check-ups.

People with dental implants can have MRI imaging. If there is anything suspicious about the issue, we recommend that you consult your dentist.

It is very important to follow your doctor's recommendations after the operation during the recovery process. After implant application, swelling and color change may occur in the operation area. These symptoms may vary depending on the person's skin structure and the size of the operation area. Cold application for the first 24 hours after the procedure can reduce the edema that will occur. The painkiller recommended by your doctor will be effective in controlling pain.

For a good recovery, it should be preferred to consume softer foods and not use the treated side for a few days following the operation. Mouthwashes recommended by your doctor will benefit you in cleaning the operation area.

When cleaning the operation area, extra soft brushes designed for post-surgical procedures should generally be preferred, and very harsh movements should be avoided.

At the end of the first week following the implant application, most of the complaints related to the procedure had regressed and the operation area had approached to a normal appearance. The healing of the implant to the bone varies depending on the location where it is made, the technique, the physical and surface properties of the implant, and whether an additional bone graft is applied to the operation area, but it may take between 6 weeks and 6 months.

The most important step in the care of fixed dentures on implants is to brush the teeth at least twice a day, for not less than 2 minutes, with the brush and paste recommended by your dentist. After brushing the teeth, it is recommended to clean the spaces between the teeth with dental floss. Finally, cleaning the teeth with an oral irrigator will pave the way for the healthy use of dentures in the mouth for many years.

When cleaning implant-supported removable dentures, it is recommended to wash the removable denture after meals and to brush the implant-supported retainers in the mouth. Removable dentures should be removed at night and cleaned with a denture cleaning tablet, soaked in water in which the tablet is dissolved for 5 to 10 minutes, according to the recommendation of the tablet, and then rinsed and not left in clear water until the morning. Removable dentures must be removed at night.
